How do I treat algae?
Posted by cara knapp on
Since there are many different types of algae and, in turn, countless possible treatments, it's usually best to start with the nature and color of the algae when seeking treatment advice. Shock or super-chlorination tends to be the most-utilized approach; however, the use of a powerful and all-inclusive treatment product may be preferred. Regardless of method, keeping filters clean and running the pump continuously are key to ensuring success. It's always a good idea to have a professional water test performed prior to, during, and after any algae treatment in order to ensure proper recommendations and water balance parameters are...

How long should my pump run?
Posted by cara knapp on
At a minimum, pool volume should be cycled through the filter at least once per day (referred to as one turnover). Ideally, in order to allow for more optimal filtration of debris and chemical performance, several turnovers per day is preferred. Although you can determine the turnover rate by calculating your pool volume against the amount of water that can be moved through your pump per hour, it is usually acceptable to run an average of at least 8 - 12 hours per day. A good rule of thumb is to ensure that your pump and filter run at least...
How do I backwash my filter?
Posted by cara knapp on
Although filter types can vary, the most common backwash valve is a push/pull design that allows for the reversal of water flow. By placing the valve in the opposite position when under normal running conditions, this allows the filter to flush and remove the debris that is trapped inside. Please remember that the system should always be turned off prior to any valve movements.
What is the best way to treat well water?

When using well water as your source for your pool, it should be maintained with chemicals intended to effectively control or remove metals because wells often have metal content that could potentially stain or cause other pools issues. When you use fresh-fill or start-ups, follow manufacturer recommendations for dosing and application. However, ongoing treatment for metals with a proper sequestrant is also a necessity for well users.
How often should I test my pool water? Why is it important to test my pool water?

Testing your pool 2-3 times a week is important to maintain adequate water balance and sanitizer levels plus to insure swimmer comfort. Test strips are a quick (30 second) means to test the pool for adequate sanitizer levels as well as pH and total alkalinity. Proper testing also ensures that calcium levels are maintained and that there are no metals present in the pool water.
